Activities & Program Flow

Math X-plorer is a dynamic learning journey with 5 interconnected activities that build progressively on one another.

📊 Program Overview

The Math X-plorer program guides students through a series of linked activities. They begin with Shopping n Cooking to practice budgeting and measurement, then progress to an Equation Builder challenge, test quick mental calculation in the Math Boss Battle, reflect on Desire vs. Needs when making spending decisions, and finally apply budgeting skills in a board game called Let's Travel. The progression shows how the activities build on one another—from foundational arithmetic and budgeting skills to complex decision-making under time pressure.

Shopping n Cooking activity photo
🎯 Goal

Help students manage a budget and apply arithmetic in a realistic grocery-shopping and cooking situation.

⚙️ How It Works
  • Each team picks a food and drink menu to prepare.
  • They solve math questions about the menu to determine the quantity or weight of each ingredient.
  • Using play money, students "buy" the required ingredients from a makeshift store.
  • After shopping, teams weigh and measure the ingredients and then cook.
📦 Materials

Play money, menu cards, food and drink items (e.g., cornflakes, bread, jam, milk, water, cordial), measuring cups/spoons, a weighing scale.

⭐ Scoring

Points reward both accuracy and soft skills:

  • Correct calculations: 4 points
  • Wise spending decisions: 3 points
  • Teamwork: 5 points
💡 Why It Matters

Students practice working within a budget, converting measurements and quantities, and collaborating as a team—skills vital for everyday life.

Equation Builder activity photo
🎯 Goal

Develop students' ability to form and evaluate simple mathematical equations using basic operations.

⚙️ How It Works
  • Number cards and operation cards (+, –, ×, ÷, =) are hidden around the room; groups search for them.
  • Teams discuss and choose cards they've collected.
  • Using these cards, they build an equation that yields the highest possible value.
  • If there's extra time, they may solve a quiz to construct additional equations.
📦 Materials

Number cards, mathematical symbol cards, whiteboard and markers.

⭐ Scoring
  • Equation producing the highest value: 10 points
  • Second highest: 7 points
  • Optional quiz round: 1 point per correct answer
💡 Why It Matters

This activity encourages strategic thinking and reinforces arithmetic operations in a competitive yet cooperative setting.

Math Boss Battle activity photo
🎯 Goal

Strengthen quick-thinking skills so students can solve math problems confidently under time pressure—similar to making real-life decisions that require fast reasoning.

⚙️ How It Works
  • Two teams compete head-to-head.
  • The facilitator reads a math question aloud.
  • The first team to hit the buzzer answers.
  • If the first team's answer is wrong, the other team gets a chance.
📦 Materials

A set of quiz questions, a buzzer (or bell), and a score sheet.

⭐ Scoring
  • Correct and rapid answer: 2 points
  • Correct answer after a rebound: 1 point
💡 Why It Matters

This fast-paced "boss battle" game motivates students to recall facts quickly while maintaining accuracy.

Desire or Needs activity photo
🎯 Purpose

Bridge the gap between solving math problems and applying budgeting skills by encouraging students to think critically about their spending choices.

⚙️ How It Works
  • Interactive discussion or sorting activity where students categorize expenses.
  • Students classify items and expenses into two categories: needs (essential items) and desires (optional or luxury items).
  • Facilitator leads reflection on decision-making and trade-offs in budgeting.
  • Students discover how personal values influence spending decisions.
💡 Why It Matters

This reflective activity teaches students to distinguish between essential and optional purchases, fostering responsible financial decision-making and preparing them for real-world budgeting scenarios.

Let's Travel activity photo
🎯 Goal

Teach budgeting and decision-making in a simulated travel scenario, helping students manage money and plan activities over a day.

⚙️ How It Works
  • Students roll dice to move around a Let's Travel game board featuring destinations such as night markets, sports centres, playgrounds and homestays, each costing a different amount of money and time.
  • When landing on a space, they may choose to "buy" that destination if it's available. Purchased places cannot be bought by others.
  • Players pay the listed price using play money and record the purchase and cost on a planning sheet that tracks time from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Landing on a HOTS card triggers a question; answering correctly yields a reward.
  • Some spaces charge a tax or penalty (e.g., toll fees or transportation tax).
  • At the end, students calculate total spending and remaining balance.
📦 Materials

Game board, dice, tokens, play money, planning sheets, question cards and HOTS cards.

⭐ Scoring
  • Each place purchased and correctly recorded: 1 point
  • Bonus rewards from HOTS questions
  • Bonus from efficient budgeting
💡 Why It Matters

The game mirrors real-life travel planning—students must decide where to spend limited resources, weigh "wants" versus "needs," handle unexpected costs and keep track of time and money. This is practical financial literacy in action.
